The term LED is often found in association with other acronyms, as seen for SMD LEDs. The name COB LED refers to Chip On Board LED technology. This is a technology introduced in 2011, which has allowed the development of high-power diodes characterized by a reduced light-emitting surface .
Why choose the COB or SMD LED solution?
The introduction of COB LEDs has brought with it some significant advantages. First of all the possibility of miniaturizing the fixtures and light sources inside. COB technology facilitates the installation of individual plates nearby. This allows precise control of the distribution of the light beam thanks to the absence of space between one LED module and another. However, an application limit of this technology consists of the power value of the appliance (possibly lower than 50/70W) on which it must be installed. Outdoor SMD screen LEDs are to be preferred over COB technology precisely because they are more reliable and perform in those applications with high power.
Micro SMD LEDs: what they consist of
Today’s market requires increasingly smaller, but at the same time more efficient, LEDs. The search for even more high-performance SMD LED chips has led to the creation of devices capable of achieving truly brilliant lumen/Watt ratios, thus allowing the development of increasingly smaller luminaires. In this context, SMD micro LEDs were “born”, high efficiency miniaturized technologies for narrow circuits.
RGB SMD LEDs: what it is
RGB SMD LED technology allows you to change the color of the light thanks to the use of three diodes: red, blue, and green. To vary the color of the light, these diodes are mixed according to precise intensities. In backlighting Projects, it is usual to use an RGB SMD LED source to give an aesthetic and design component to the light profile and at the same time combine a functional aspect. Each color can be associated with a specific application state to communicate a specific function to the end user.
SMD LED: available colors
Depending on the different combinations, RGB SMD LEDs offer a fairly wide variety of colors: blue, red, yellow SMD LEDs, and many others. The RGBW LED also has the white SMD LED variant, the acronym is in fact Red Green Blu and White. As regards white SMD LEDs, it is possible to notice a different shade of white depending on the specific source. The color temperature of white, which can be warm, cool, or neutral, depends on several factors, including the color bin of a specific LED manufacturer.
SMD LED dimensions
SMD LED chips are characterized by a rectangular shape that varies in length and width depending on the model. Generally, however, regardless of size, SMD LEDs do not exceed 5.7 millimeters in length and 5 millimeters in width.
The size of the SMD screen is what most influences the brightness level and the electrical consumption of the device. In fact, the larger size of the device also corresponds to a high level of brightness. These characteristics are easily understandable thanks to the numerical code that identifies the different types of LEDs.
